MELISSA BUSTILLO

Mitigation Specialist

Melissa Bustillo, LCSW (she/her/ella) is Masferrer & Riley’s Mitigation Specialist. She was born in San Salvador, El Salvador where she spent the first eight years of her life. She grew up speaking both Spanish and English, having learned English at Escuela Americana, an accredited international school which provides immersive English language learning. In late 2001, Melissa and her family immigrated to the United States (US).

Upon graduating from high school, Melissa continued her educational goals as a non-traditional student at the Harvard Extension School (HES), a school within the Harvard University umbrella. HES refreshed the love of learning that Escuela Americana had planted in her from an early age. At HES, she completed a Bachelor of Liberal Arts (ALB) in Psychology and a minor in Communications as well as a Graduate Certificate in Business Communications. Soon after graduating, she began working in the mental health field as an Outreach Worker. She worked with adults and provided intensive case management services to support clients with acute mental health challenges in order to increase their stability and access to resources within their communities.

In order to further her education and professional goals, Melissa began her journey towards a Master of Social Work (MSW) at Boston College (BC). At BC, Melissa was part of the Latinx Leadership Initiative (LLI). The LLI is a cohort specifically geared towards social workers who want to work with Latinx (Latine) communities. As part of her degree requirements, she completed two internships; one at North Suffolk Community Services’s Children’s After School Program (CASP), and the second within the Social Work Department of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI). At BC, Melissa received a Dean’s Fellowship and BCSSW/Mass General Brigham Community Fellowship. She was also a Rappaport Fellow in Public Policy and part of the Spier Mini-Fellowship in Aging. In May of 2024, Melissa completed her MSW along with a Certificate in Trauma.

Along with her experience in the mental health field and as a social worker, Melissa also has experience in higher education. From 2020 to 2024, Melissa was a Teaching Assistant (TA) at HES supporting a public speaking course and professional development courses in professional presenting. She was also a Graduate Assistant (GA) at BC’s Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE). In the fall of 2024, she moved on to co-teaching a Sociology course at Lasell University before moving onto Masferrer & Riley.

As the Mitigation Specialist, Melissa gets to know the clients to introduce them as a person separate from the crimes they’ve been accused of to the courts. She uses her knowledge of the client to create detailed reports, connects clients with programs and services to set them up for success, and uses a combination of trauma based practices and therapeutic support when meeting with clients. She uses her language skills and cultural sensitivity to guide the work that she does at the firm to properly advocate for clients and their needs.
